OPENING THE CABINET DOORS: CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES FROM THE AMERICAN INDIAN COLLECTION
Textile Gallery
Opening October 16, 2010
This exhibition focuses on historic American Indian clothing and accessories, such as a Ghost Dance dress and Native American Church objects and presents artifacts acquired from the Rowe family (RO Ranch near Clarendon), including a mountain lion bow case and quiver, arrows, leggings, headdresses, and a buffalo coat.
The highlight of the exhibition will be a shield that may be the oldest Spanish-Comanche hybrid artifact. Reputed to be a battlefield acquisition from the mid-1870s, a Comanche shield cover preserved a thistle design, which dates the initial shield to about 1780-1786. Research also indicates that this round shield is from the La Mancha district of Spain.
