A RUNNING FIGHT: THE RED RIVER WAR IN ART
Foran Galleries
Opening October 3
There are many depictions of “Custer’s Last Stand” and the “Battle at Little Bighorn”; however, without such a dramatic and pivotal battle, artists’ paintings of the U. S. Army on the Southern Plains are less well known. The exhibition will be the first of its kind to focus on this particular aspect of the history of the American West. Included among the artists are those of national repute such as Frederic Remington, Nick Eggenhofer, W. Herbert Dunton and Edward Borein, as well as Texas artists H. D. Bugbee, Ben Carlton Mead, John Eliot Jenkins and Olive Vandruff.

PANHANDLE-PLAINS FALL FESTIVAL

October 10, 2009           11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Come Home to Your Museum! In conjunction with WTAMU’s homecoming festivities, PPHM hosts demonstrations, children’s crafts and activities for all ages that engage visitors in the rich history, art and ethnology of the region. Also part of the activities, all ages can leave history behind by making their mark on a large graffiti board.  The finished community art project will be displayed in the museum after Fall Festival.

Popcorn, soft drinks and water will be available for purchase. The festival is free to the public, and admission to the museum is free all day.

CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE FROM THE POWERS FAMILY
Furniture Gallery
Opening October 31
When Sydney Franklin Powers, Jr. (1918-1984) and his wife Edna Laverne Green (1919-2007) completed their new “dream” home at 1608 South Bonham Street in Amarillo in late 1950, they purchased a houseful of new, up-to-date, contemporary furniture that they used for the rest of their lives.  An exhibit in the Furniture Gallery will spotlight a variety of these middle class, “mid-century modern” furnishings from the Powers home.
